What I do
Story research and script consultancy
I help writers, directors and producers uncover new ideas, research stories and enhance authenticity in their dramas. I advise on scripts and carry out research to strengthen both character and story as well as providing background context for new comedy and drama ideas. From identifying experts and relevant research material to interviewing people, world building and context briefings, I have worked on projects with writer/directors such as Jack Thorne, Sarah Page, Clio Barnard, Paddy Considine, Ian Martin, Pete Jackson, Jonathan Glazer, Carol Morley, Paul Viragh, Sam Firth, Andrew Steggall, Tinge Krishnan, Harry MacQueen and Rachel Tunnard. I have particular subject expertise in neuroscience, psychology and mental health but I also take on research projects across a range of topics.
Script development and production
I have commissioned and developed over 30 scripts across a diverse range of genre from comedy to science fiction and in film and television.
My Executive Producer credits include Peter Strickland and Nick Fenton's Biophilia Live (2013), Phillip Warnell's Ming of Harlem (2012), Rachel Tunnard's Adult Life Skills (2015), Clio Barnard's Dark River (2017), Paddy Considine's Journeyman (2017), Carol Morley's Out of Blue (2018) and Craig Robert’s Eternal Beauty (2019).
Interdisciplinary workshops, writers rooms and events
I devise and manage ideas-generating and research-driven workshops and events for writers. In the past this has included writers labs at festivals, story workshops for radio writers and producers, and evening events and dinners to connect writers with new ideas and expertise.
Screenwriter-in residence and other talent initiatives
I have particular experience in devising and running screenwriter programmes. In particular, I was the architect of the flagship screenwriting programme, the Wellcome Screenwriting Fellowship in partnership with BFI and Film4 which has alumni Clio Barnard, Jonathan Glazer, Carol Morley, Sally Wainwright and Michaela Coel. I went on to develop similar screenwriter-in-residence and talent development partnerships including Edinburgh International Film Festival Screenwriter-in Residence, and the National Film and Television School Bridges to Industry for Drama with Sky Atlantic.
Programme strategy and management
I have over twenty years experience of researching, developing and delivering strategy and programmes for the cultural and education sectors. Most recently this included devising and leading an arts funding strategy, building a new programme for working with the film and drama industries, and leading marketing and development strategies for technology and education organisations.
Trained in research methods to postgraduate level, I've lead a range of research projects over my career from qualitative interviews to market analysis. In particular, I commissioned a large-scale ten-year evaluation of the Sciart programme and ran a qualitative study of the impact of arts collaborations on scientists and science. I also sat on a number of art-science judging panels and was regularly called on to speak as an expert in this area.
Do get in touch if you think I might be able to help with your ideas and projects.
